The number of utility patents awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office identifies the intellectual property (IP) that universities choose to protect each year.
The Board tracks patents awarded by the federal government as a measure of the research done on our campuses that improves lives and creates economic value. In 2022, five institutions in the State University System ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide (Source: National Academy of Inventors). The Board’s 2025 Strategic Plan goal is to produce 410 patents during the 2024 calendar year.
This metric is included in the Board’s Accountability Plan, 2025 Strategic Plan and Preemienent Research University Benchmarks.
