Larry Robinson, the interim president at Florida A&M, told trustees in August that he would not be a candidate as they began the search for a new leader.
However, one powerful group, the executive board of FAMU’s National Alumni Association, is too impressed by the job Robinson has done during the past seven months. It has sent a formal letter to the Board of Trustees, urging it to consider Robinson as a candidate as the search continues for an 11th president at Florida A&M University.
Among the reasons given in the letter, presented during last week’s trustees meeting and received as an email by board members earlier this week, is Robinson’s key leadership role as the university works to emerge unscathed from its probationary status with Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, its accrediting body.
Robinson also has been the architect of FAMU’s sweeping anti-hazing reforms, and their implementation is vital to FAMU’s reputation and success, said Tommy Mitchell, NAA president.
“It’s just a recommendation, a letter from the executive board,” Mitchell said. “Dr. Robinson understands FAMU and HBCUs. The board felt that he would be a good candidate.”
