FAMU has reopened its search for a new director for its famous Marching 100 band.
The university announced this afternoon that it has launched a national search for a new leader after the previous search failed when contract negotiations broke down between FAMU and finalist Jorim Reid, the director of bands for North Carolina Central University.
The new deadline to apply is March 1. Larry Robinson, the interim president of Florida A&M University, said he hopes to hire a new band director before the end of the spring 2013 semester. The new director will play a key role in driving out hazing and implementing new policies in the wake of drum major Robert Champion's hazing death in Orlando in late 2011.
Robinson said FAMU wants someone with an "unwavering resolve to eliminate hazing from the band and FAMU."
Once a new band director is hired, the band will be one step closer to being reinstated. Robinson has said that the band, which has been suspended since shortly after Champion's death, will be reinstated after a host of reforms and new leaders have been put in place.
He has not said, however, whether the band will be allowed to perform during the fall 2013 football season or at this year's Florida Classic in Orlando.
