FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 27, 2011
FLORIDA BOARD OF GOVERNORS APPOINTS NINE TO FOUR UNIVERSITY BOARDS OF TRUSTEES
Appointments made for new Board of Trustees members at UCF, UF, UNF, UWF
The Trustee Nominating Committee of the Florida Board of Governors put forward – and the Board of Governors ratified and approved – nine appointments to four universities’ Boards of Trustees on June 23. The four universities with new members are University of Central Florida in Orlando, University of Florida in Gainesville, University of North Florida in Jacksonville and University of West Florida in Pensacola.
Each one of the 11 institutions in the State University System has a 13-member Board of Trustees responsible for cost-effective policy, and for implementing and maintaining high-quality education programs consistent with the institution’s mission. The Boards of Trustees also develop processes to meet state policy, budgeting and education standards.
“The role of a university trustee is unique, as balancing institutional needs with those of the broader State University System can be a difficult task. I congratulate our new trustees, and I look forward to their leadership and commitment to excellence that will support public higher education in the State of Florida,” said Board of Governors Chair Ava L. Parker, an attorney in Jacksonville who was a member of the University of Central Florida’s Board of Trustees before beginning her service to the Board of Governors for the State University System.
Each applicant had a rigorous interview process with at least two members of the Board of Governors from the Trustee Nominating Committee. Each appointee also completes an intensive orientation with the Board of Governors once appointed. The appointments were made at the Board of Governors’ meeting on Thursday, and most terms are for a period through 2016.
“The Board of Governors has appointed individuals to the Boards of Trustees who are interested in taking our universities to a level of excellence that helps the State University System and the goals we share with our 11 outstanding institutions,” said Morteza “Mori” Hosseini of Daytona Beach and Chair of the Trustee Nominating Committee.
The Florida Board of Governors’ appointments are separate from appointments also made to university Boards of Trustees by the Governor of Florida. A university’s student body president or a designee also serves as a standing member of the Boards of Trustees.
The nine appointees are listed below, and their completed applications are posted on the Board of Governors’ web site at:
